Y-12 produces secondaries for nuclear warheads undergoing "life extension." A typical thermo-nuclear weapon has two bombs in it. The "primary" is an atomic bomb similar to the bomb used to destroy Nagasaki. When it explodes, it acts as a trigger for the "secondary," which then explodes in a massive release of energy and heat -- a thermonuclear fusion reaction -- the hydrogen bomb.
